Jann Holzapfel was born in 1980 in Dortmund, Germany where he still resides. As a young skateboarder at the age of 14, Jann started shooting the skateboarding scene with his first analog SLR.
During that time he also started making music and experimented with graffiti and hip hop. After high school Jann became an audiovisual media designer and started freelancing as a filmmaker, camera assistant and director of photography.
In 2004 Jann started producing electronic music and had some live gigs also as a DJ. Since 2012 he works as a freelance photographer and director of photography on documentaries, advertising and music clips.
To name a few he photographed an action movie Breakdown Forest, was the first camera operator for the documentary Der Orden des Papstes, and second camera operator of Das Atlantis des Nordens. He is currently working on the drama Das Mädchen Ohne Hände (The Girl With No Hands).
Jan’s influences and inspirations come from many places such as Dadaism; especially John Cage, Cubism, and Michelle Gondry.
“I take lots of ideas and emotions from music and try to tell it in pictures. I photograph all the time regardless if it pays or not. I do it alone or with my girlfriend Jenny Heinzl. It is a kind of freedom to have the possibility to design or show whatever you like,
whatever is in your mind” – Jann Holzapfel
