Weslei Barba was born in São Paulo, Brazil, where he lives today.
It was on the streets of his hometown that he took his first pictures, right away producing work related to the genre of street photography. He felt an immediate need to capture moments of daily life in São Paulo that had always seemed interesting to him.
Weslei studied Advertising at Senac University. In 2013 he started working as a photographer’s assistant and also as a producer in the areas of Journalism and Cinema. He’s been working as a volunteer at the favela of Heliópolis since 2011, on cinema related social projects.
During the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Weslei, as a member of journalists’ collective Midia Ninja, participated in a photographic program created by Magnum photos, using the pretext of Football to create a shared vision between the legendary agency and local photographers. “Offside Brazil” was a project meant to document the people, places, and culture of Brazil against the backdrop of the World Cup.
Weslei currently works as a video maker and freelance photographer. He’s also member of photo collectives Remirar and Flanares.
